We Are Learning About:
Reading: We now know all our SuperKids friends!! So, we are now on to learn about what the SuperKids do to have fun: “The SuperKids Club” The first book in the SuperKids Club we will learn the Bb & Rr and the plural —s.
Math: We will finish Topic 10: Addition this week. Then we will start Topic 11: Subtraction. Subtraction is also difficult for Kindergarteners. Please practice at home. Again, use pennies, forks ,spoons, and toys to help your child with a hands-on activity. For example: 9-4. Set out nine spoons in a row. Then have your child take 4 away. Ask them how many they have left. Use the flashcards that I gave you in the plastic bag back in September. They are in the bag with the sight words.
Religion: We will learn about Jesus is God the Son.
Humanities: The Hyksos Invasion of Egypt is what we will learn about this week.
Science: Once again, we will learn more about Magnets.
Writing: Please sit down with your child and come up with a list of 20+ “problems” your child has had in his/her lifetime. The problem doesn’t have to be any big thing. Some examples are: the child got ill/sick, lost a mitten/boot (anything they have lost), Fell off bike, got a skinned knee, pencil broke, got into a fight with brother or sister or friend, got lost in a store or anywhere, Mom or Dad were upset with child, didn’t get to go to____, Didn’t want to go to bed, didn’t like what was for dinner/lunch, didn’t want to clean their room or play area, was scared because____, one of their toys broke. Etc. If you have not done so, Please send the list of problems into school ASAP. They were due on February 15th.
Star of the Week for February 25th
A couple of times a month we will have a Star of the Week student in our classroom. This entitles the student to be the line-leader, to lead the morning calendar routine, to share/tell all about him/herself by filling in a poster. This will come home about a week or so before they are the star. A letter will also be included with the poster explaining all the special things the student will have an opportunity to do.
I have been testing your child on their reading ability (called Benchmark Assessment System-BAS for short) to find what level they are at. The levels are: Pre-A, then A-Z. I will be emailing each of you shortly (after I test your child) to let you know what level he/she is on so that you may get some leveled books at your own child’s ability.
Your child should be reading at an A level or a B level by this time. Please only use these leveled books with your child, or they will become frustrated at the book being too difficult and then they don’t want to read. We don’t want that to happen, now, don’t we?
You will find leveled books in the Scholastic book flyers. They usually come with levels A, B, C, and D in a pack. Usually there are around twelve books for $12.00 dollars, or twenty books for $20.00, which is a wonderful deal. In the February flyers, most of the flyers have one or two of these leveled book packs. (Orders are due Monday, February 25th.) Otherwise, you can go to your local public library and talk to the librarian and ask him/her for level A & B books.
I am still waiting for some of the January reading logs to come back to me. If you have not done so yet, please send in your child’s January Reading Log.
The Sight words are MEMORY words, which means your child needs to memorize them, NOT stretch (or sound) them out. Many of the sight words do not follow the rules of phonetics, so don’t have your child stretch them out. Kindergarten will only learn the short vowel sounds. They will learn the long vowel sounds in first grade. They just need to memorize each word and it’s spelling. Use the flashcards I gave you last September.

The date of our 100th day of Kindergarten is on Friday, February 22nd. We will celebrate this by doing many things with the number 100! ***Please have your child bring in 100 things (items) such as marbles, cotton balls, candy pieces, etc.) to show the class!!***
Thank you so much for the special gift of your children! I am so blessed to have each and every one of your children in my classroom. They are all wonderful in their own unique ways and I cherish every day I have with them! Please keep me in your prayers to help me be the best teacher I can be for your child. I will continue to pray each day for all of you and your children. THANK YOU!
As we learn prayers to our God here at school, please reinforce these prayers by saying them at home. We say the prayer before meals: “Bless Us O Lord,” the “Glory Be,” the “Hail Mary,” the morning and night time prayer, “Angel of God,” and the “Our Father.” Ask your child to say these for you, and please join in by saying them together with your family daily.
