Ruhnke Review 3/18/19

Thank you for sharing your beautiful children with the St. Jerome community and ME! I really missed each and every child over the spring break. I’m happy they have all returned relaxed, in good moods, safe, and ready to learn! I am so blessed to be their Kindergarten Teacher!!
We Are Learning About:
Reading: Our next adventure in “The SuperKids Club” we will learn the letters “Nn” & “Mm".
Math: Math Facts-Help your child master the math facts by using the flash-cards I gave you back in September. Both the addition and subtraction cards are in the bag with the sight word flash-cards. We will begin with Topic 12 on Monday, March 18th: Larger Numbers. This includes numbers 11-20, patterns, Odd & Even, counting to 100, skip counting by 2’s, 5’s, 10’s.
Religion: We will continue to learn about Lent.
Humanities: This week we will learn about Moses’ Birth, the Ten Plagues in Egypt, and the Exodus.
Science: We will begin a unit on Being Healthly.
Writing: For our Writer’s Workshop we are working on a three-sentence personal narrative paper. 1. The first sentence should tell the characters and the setting. The characters are the people or the animals. The setting is where & when. 2.The second sentence should tell the problem. 3. The third sentence should tell the resolution/how to fix the problem. Parents, will you please help your child with remembering these? THANK YOU!!
Star of the Week for March 18th
A couple of times a month we will have a Star of the Week student in our classroom. This entitles the student to be the line-leader, to lead the morning calendar routine, to share/tell all about him/herself by filling in a poster. This will come home about a week or so before they are the star. A letter will also be included with the poster explaining all the special things the student will have an opportunity to do.
February Reading Logs were due on March 1st. If you have not done so yet, please send them back to me!!
READ, READ, READ: I hope all of you have been helping your child with their reading by practicing the sight words each day. Also, a reminder that the black and white paper books (many are “My_____ Book”) that come home should be read daily. Please take the time to read with your child for 15-20 minutes each and every day. Your child’s reading level was recently shared with you via an email from me. Please find books at that level so that your child can be successful. Go back to the email I sent to you to find the level your child is at. Your child will thank you. : ) HAPPY READING!! If you need books at your child’s level, remember to look in the Scholastic flyers I sent home earlier this month. They will say A-D books. They usually come in packs of about 12 or more, and they come either in Fiction or Non-Fiction. Any orders are due on Monday, March 18th.
The Sight words are MEMORY words, which means your child needs to memorize them, NOT stretch (or sound) them out. Many of the sight words do not follow the rules of phonetics, so don’t have your child stretch them out. Kindergarten will only learn the short vowel sounds. They will learn the long vowel sounds in first grade. They just need to memorize each word and it’s spelling. Use the flashcards I gave you last September.

Scholastic Book Orders:
Remember to invest in your child’s reading by getting their level books. Look for the packs with levels A-D. Orders are due by March 18th. If you would like to place an order; the easiest way to do so is online. Use code RGVYW. If you would rather fill in your order using the flyer, please send it back to school with your child, and with a check or cash for the total. THANK YOU!!
Water Bottles & Drinks at School
This is a reminder that water bottles are welcome here at school and in the kindergarten classroom. The bottles are for water only. Students are allowed to drink water or milk at school, and juice that is only 100% juice with no sugars added. (The juice that is sold in the lunchroom has no sugars, and is 100% juice). NOTHING else may be brought to school. So, please don’t send pop/soda, other juices that are not 100% juice with no sugars added, flavored water, Kool-Aid, or anything else. The milk your child is offered here, at snack time, is free. Thank you!
