We are Learning About:

Reading: We will continue our new phonics curriculum, “Groves.” This program will be used the entire school year. It consists of Rhyming, Onset Fluency (beginning sound), Blending words, Isolating the Final sound in a word, Segmenting words, Adding words, Deleting words, Substituting words, Letter Naming, & Language Awareness.

Math: We will begin Topic 3: Patterns Vocabulary for Topic 3: repeat & pattern. Please continue to work with your child on the vocabulary that was in Topic 2. Some had a difficult time with understanding these words: inside, outside, over, under, on, top, middle, bottom, before, after, left, right. Please work with your child so they know & understand these words/terms. Thank you. You can practice doing a patterns at home. Use items you find in and around your house. For example: use a spoons and forks-set up 1 spoon, 1 fork, 1 spoon, 1 fork, 1 spoon, 1 fork etc. Or use colors: Use color crayons or markers or find items with color. Put them in a line to make a pattern & ask your child what the pattern is. Right now, our class calendar is green & red apples. 2 green apples then 2 red apples, 2 green apples, then 2 red apples, etc. Then you could do shape patterns. For example: draw 1 triangle, then draw 2 circles, then 1 square & repeat the pattern.

Religion: Actions & Attitudes. The Ten Commandments.

Humanities: Cain and Abel: Genesis 4 & The Flood: Genesis 6-9.

Science: Energy

Star of the Week for September  30, 2019

Gus L.

A couple of times a month we will have a Star of the Week student in our classroom. This entitles the student to be the line-leader, to lead the morning calendar routine, to share/tell all about him/herself by filling in a poster. This will come home about a week or so before they are the star. A letter will also be included with the poster explaining all the special things the student will have an opportunity to do.

Memory/Sight Words:

Memory/Sight words are words we find in every sentence we read. Students must know these words to be able to read a sentence. Students should memorize these words, NOT sound them out. Please practice these words every day, both reading them and spelling them. Here are the first four Memory/Sight words:

a, I, to, the, in, it, is, at

Take-Home Folder

Your child comes home each day with a nice plastic Take-Home folder in their backpack. This folder holds all their beautiful school work they have done, and other important papers. Please take out all papers each day. Look through them & shower your child with praise!! Keep the papers at home (unless it is something that needs to be signed and returned). Then make sure the folder gets put back in the backpack so that it comes to me the next day. Thank you!!

Thursday Folder

This is a white folder/envelope with pink tape around the edges. It comes home every Thursday. It has many papers from the school office that are very important in it. Please take all papers out & read through them. Fill in any that need signing, then put them back in the folder/envelope and return it to school on Friday. Thank you!

Help your Child with Shoe Tying:

Many Kindergarteners need their shoes tied several times a day. I will gladly help them, but to tie 15+ sets of shoes several times a day takes much of our learning time. So, if you would please work with your child to help them learn how to tie, it would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you.

Did You Know?

St. Jerome School requires at least 15 hours of volunteer time from each family? It helps keep the school going strong and shares the load. So, if you are ready to volunteer for some of your 15 hours, then contact the office at 651-771-8494 and they can let you know what those opportunities for volunteering are.

Rake-A-Thon

The Rake-a-Thon is a way for St. Jerome School to earn money for books, Field Trips, and materials needed in the classroom. ALL students should participate. Students should collect $$ money from family members-Grandparents, parents, cousins, Aunts & Uncles, friends, neighbors, etc. then bring the $$ money into school. On Friday, October 25th the entire school will go out into the neighborhood and rake lawns for those people unable to do this themself. This is a way we can give back to our community and earn money for our school. We ask that each student bring in whatever amount of $$ money they can-$1.00 or $100.00 dollars-whatever they are able. We want 100% participation! If we get 100% participation, then we will get to play Turkey Bingo with all the students at St. Jerome!! And if our class has 100% participation, then we will get something special just for our classroom! So, please have your child collect & bring in whatever amount of $$ money they can to help our school. THANK YOU!
